Subtypes

Berr (Arctic Reindeer Subtype)

A medium-sized reindeer that stands at 10 to 11hh at the shoulder, and weighs 90kg (200lbs) to 150kg (33lbs), the latter being the ones with heavier antlers.  Those who live in the islands of the arctic are smaller due to lesser intake of food sources.  Some are migratory while some are solitary, depending if they live on the islands or not.

Their coats depend on where they live: If farther north, they are typically lighter, while others are a little more colorful.  Black and darker coats are very rare and are seen as a bad omen due to the inability to hide during the winter months.

Main food sources are lichen, sedges, grasses, twigs and mushrooms.  In the rare occasions, they will eat antlers and seaweed and lick salt deposits.  When food is very scarce, they are able to feed on lemmings, fish and bird eggs.

The Berr's main predator are wolves, but can also be the sharks that swim around waiting for an easy meal for any reindeer that dares to cross the islands.

Holt (Taiga Reindeer Subtype)

The third-largest subtype of reindeer that are typically darker in coat and antler colors to help camouflage them in lichen thriving large forests.  They mainly live in marshes, bogs, lakes and river regions.  They weigh up to 110–210 kg (242–462 lbs) and have a shoulder height average of approximately 12hh.

Also known as "those lazy ones" by other kinds of reindeer, which they don't find amusing at all.  These reindeer don't forge large herds like others do like their forest cousins, nor travel great distances or socialize with others.   Instead, they form smaller herds and stay within  typically stay in one spot all year round, trying to survive the elements and predators.

Their coats come in a variety of shades and patterns, no coat being deemed lucky or unlucky like the other reindeer.

Fjall (Mountain Reindeer Subtype)

A mid-sized to large subspecies of reindeer have a thick double coat that protects them from the winter months. In warmer temperatures, these reindeer often switch from nasal breathing to open mouth panting for evaporative cooling.  The largest average 70 to 150 kg (154 to 331 pounds), while smaller weigh on average 40 to 100 kg (88 to 220 pounds).

Their summer coat is mostly pale brown with white rumps and, in some genetic variations, black legs and creamy-white necks. Their winter coat can be cream-white with beige shoulders and backs, or completely cream-white.

Unlike their Holt cousins, this reindeer typically form larger herds.  During the rut, those who wish to collect a harem and fight for others size each other up rather than battle due to energy reserved for other purposes such as courtship, mating, and defending from predators.

Fýri (Taiga Reindeer Subtype)

They are often found near the Holt herds, often leading to fights that can cause devastating damage to each other.  Unlike their arctic counterparts, these reindeer antlers typically grow with thin tines vs the thicker ones in the arctic where they grow antlers that seem to shield their eyes and also help dig craters into the snow.  These antlers are mainly used to aggressively fight for their small harems, due to low numbers in the areas of the dense forests that they live in.

While not the tallest nor the largest, they are 180–220 cm (71–87 inches) long and the tail 10–15 cm (4–6 inches).  Those who are larger weigh 150–250 kg (331–552 lbs), while smaller weigh about 100 kg (220 lbs). Their longer legs, wide hooves and narrower V-shaped antlers facilitate movement through deep snow and wooded habitats.

Their coat colors are typically brown hues, but can become darker.  Those who are darker are considered good luck, especially if they are blessed by the spirits.  However, the fire spirit isn't deemed lucky by them due to superstition.

Calves are generally raised in the pastures, where the forests meet in the middle of the large mountain range.

The spirits whom they say prays for is the Earth Spirit and Water Spirit.

Reus (Mountain Reindeer Subtype)

Visual Trait Index

The largest of the reindeer standing at 15hh, they are typically dark coat during the spring and summer months while in the late fall they start growing their winter coat of near white. They live in the mountains in the highest elevation, forested areas with deep snowfall, and they feed solely on tree lichens during winter.  This gives them relatively high protection from predators in the winter months, but can leave them vulnerable as predators work into higher elevations during the summer.

They frequently face off predators, year after year some have dwindled in number.  Wolves and lynxes are their main predators that are able to track and hunt them with ease even in the mountains and are able to keep up with them as they flee, unlike the wolverines and bears in the area.  During the calving season, golden eagles are able to take one down but only one a time else their kill will be stolen.  The high elevation is also the cause for many deaths where many have fallen or rolled down.

All Reus reindeer that breed will face a roll if their calf survives or not.  If not, they have to wait till the next birthing season.  The item to save a calf life known as "Birth Safely" can be used on the site.

Smár (Arctic Reindeer Subtype)

Visual Trait Index

The smallest subtype that lives in the northern regions of the arctic.  Their fur can grow quite long for the harsh winter months, while they are typically lighter colors such as White, Light Grey, Spotted, and Piebald to blend into the snow and ice surrounding them.  The black and other dark coats are quite rare, due to the low survival rate of not being able to blend in, and are deemed a bad omen.  Some calves whom are born dark will often times be abandoned.

Their eyes are usually brown, or sometimes blue, while the other shades are very rare.  Their antlers do not get taller or wider as the other types of reindeer, which allows them to go into caves and undergrowth of the forests in the mountains and forest areas.  This is especially helpful for them when the temperature drops to devastating numbers.

The spirit whom they say prays for is the Fire Spirit.
